About Campbell

Established in 1869, Campbell's, a global food company, was headquartered in Camden, New Jersey. It was the brainchild of Joseph Campbell (Campbell), a fruit merchant who partnered with Abram Anderson (Anderson), an ice box manufacturer, to produce canned vegetables, preserves, soups, and other products. When Anderson left the partnership in 1876, Campbell joined Arthur Calbraith Dorrance (Arthur), a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and a former captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II, to form a new firm which in 1891 was named the Joseph Campbell Preserve Company. In 1894, Campbell retired and three years later, John Thompson Dorrance (John), nephew of Arthur, joined the company. John developed a commercially viable method for condensing soup that made Campbell Soup a household name around the world. Campbell Preserve Company changed its corporate name to Joseph Campbell Company in 1905 and to Campbell Soup Company in 1922. Gradually, the company started diversifying its business by acquiring producers of juices, frozen foods, bakery goods, and candy.
